Jericho Fans Attack Nielsen Ratings Over Second Cancellation

Jericho Fans are at it again, this time they are fighting Nielsen for showing their show in an ugly light.

Fans of the CBS show Jericho are at it again after a second cancellation. This Campaign is large and is sweeping through the Sci-Fi community. Although they are mad at CBS this time they are pointing the finger to Nielsen Ratings, who they claim to have been misleading the public. On many Jericho related sites fans claim to be mailing nuts to Nielsen.

In a press release from a popular Jericho blog they list the faults of Nielsen. Part of the press release stated, "The Nielsen Ratings were not high enough to encourage CBS to buy into a season three, leading to its second cancellation days before the airing of the final episode. The final episode had been shot with two endings; a cliffhanger in the case of being picked up for another season, and what many fans deem as a cliffhanger that concluded the 7 episode arc storyline. The latter aired, and many fans were inspired further to start up the fight to preserve Jericho for another round of storytelling."

As the movement begins to start up again, fans hope to see Jericho again.

CE Pro hands out suggestions for HDMI

CE Pro gives HDMI suggestionsCustom installers and everyday consumers don't always have the same requirements for A/V gear. As we've mentioned before, HDMI has had some problems, but it is taking off. Follow the "read" link to get CE Pro's suggestions on what HDMI can do to help win over installers; we've got a feeling the proposed changes would make Joe and Jane Six Packs alike happy, too. We'll start off with our biggest HDMI pet peeve -- captive/locking connectors! Simply put: HDMI needs 'em. Next up, the major teething problems associated with HDMI versions 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 seem to be behind us and 1.3 seems to be a stable spec; the task at hand is to spread this info among installers (especially ones who were bitten by earlier version problems). To CE Pro's list, we'd add that all the various flavors of HDMI-CEC need to be brought under control -- when units like the Onkyo TX-SA606X get singled out for interoperability, it means lots of consumers aren't enjoying any ease of use. What would you like to see in the HDMI spec?

The Hauppauge HD PVR with component inputs gets delayed

Filed under:

ComponentMarch is almost over and we've just learned from our friend Brent Evans, that the most exciting HD product expected this year is delayed until May or June. What's so exciting about an HD PVR card for a computer? Well, with this card you can record anything you want, from wherever you want, using whatever PVR software you want. No longer will you have to wait for DirecTV's HDPC-20, or deal with ATI's CableCARD OEM requirements. You'll be able to slap this PCi device into just about any computer and roll your own PVR, just like you could before HD came along and ruined everything. In fact, the only bad thing about this device -- besides the wait and the $250 price tag -- is that it captures the uncompressed HD signal and encodes it in real time with H.264, which opens up an opportunity for a degraded signal. Speaking of H.264, because it's required Vista Media Center isn't supported yet. Many have their hopes up that the Fiji release, that's also due this Summer, will include it.

Original content coming to Xbox 360

We were kind of wondering when it was finally going to happen: Microsoft's inked a deal with a production company to do original content for the Xbox 360. The licensed back catalog of stuff is good and all, but this would fill that niche in between Xbox 360's digital downloads and long-promised IPTV. No word yet on when it's coming, just that we can expect the usual compliment of Hollywood pap.

The real reason it took so long to crack BD+

Filed under:

Down with DRMWhen SlySoft announced last week that it'd finally unlocked BD+ content, it got a lot of news coverage -- even some in the mainstream media. But what didn't get discussed was the fact that SlySoft didn't get it done by the end of 2007, as previously promised. Well Ars took the story one step closer and among other things uncovered the real reason -- no it wasn't because it was so 'hard' -- it took so long. Peer van Heuen, SlySoft head of HD technologies said in a post that "it was decided for strategic reasons to wait a bit for the outcome of the 'format war' between HD DVD and Blu-ray." We bet Macrovision wished it'd waited a bit longer before dropping $45 Million purchase on another piece of useless DRM.

Linux becomes only OS to escape PWN 2 OWN unscathed

Filed under:

After a week full of Red Bulls, Fruit by the Foot and dreams of In-N-Out, the mighty Sony VAIO loaded with Linux stood as the only machine unhacked by the end of the PWN 2 OWN hacking contest at CanSecWest. As you're well aware by now, the MacBook Air on display was seized in two minutes by the presumably well prepared Charlie Miller, and after two full days of work, Shane Macaulay and a few of his 1337 associates managed to crack the Vista rig on Friday. Reportedly, Shane and his pals weren't expecting to do battle with the extra protected SP1 version of Vista, and while the exact loophole won't be divulged, we are told that it was a cross-platform bug that "took advantage of Java to circumvent Vista's security." In the end, it was reported that some folks on hand had discovered bugs in the Linux OS, but many of them "didn't want to put the work into developing the exploit code that would be required to win the contest."

PC Magazine’s Top 100 Undiscovered Web Sites

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share some exciting news. PC Magazine has just named MediaFire as one of the 100 top new or under-the-radar sites of 2007.

“MediaFire is a free file-sharing and storage service that lets users upload unlimited files and images. What’s even better is that the site doesn’t require registration, so that’s one less password/username combo to have knocking around in your head. After the easy file-upload process, you can access your data from any computer and post links to the files for sharing with family (and coworkers if you’re using the site for work-related purposes).”

It’s an honor to be mentioned along side some truly awesome sites that I personally use on a daily basis like Ustream.TV, Meebo, Picnik, and Zamzar. If you’d like to check out more of the top 100 new or under-the-radar sites, head on over to PC Magazine for the full article.

Netflix/LG set-top box announced

Original Post is located here

After the long-rumored (from 2004) Netflix/TiVo deal fell through (in 2005), it looks like Netflix and LG are going to create their own set-top box to facilitate downloads of Netflix movies. Even better is a mention that they might just bake it into existing dual format HD-DVD/Blu-ray players.

It’s interesting that Netflix found a new partner and a way to get studios on board to allow them to do it — I suspect TiVo was seen as a hostile force for the studios a couple years ago when the Netflix/TiVo deals were first discussed. Also it’s obvious that the landscape has changed since 2004. People have broadband and are willing to buy downloadable movies, and the companies that offer them aren’t huge sources of problems or piracy.

Another interesting aspect is that LG is already thinking of how to add it as an added feature to their existing product line. That’s a great approach because I have to admit that I’ve played with a Vudu box and it’s incredibly dumb to think people will pay $400 for a box that only plays $2-5 rentals and holds a limited number of $10-20 movies permanently. It’s good to see LG recognize this from the outset and not strive to build dedicated PPV boxes you have to pay for.

HD DVD Promotion Group officially dissolves in a high-res burst of tears

Well, it's no surprise that it was going to happen, but the HD DVD Promotion Group officially dissolved today, leaving behind nothing but this terse message directing us to individual "selling agencies." And so, with literally nothing left of HD DVD, we formally close the sad chapter of consumer electronics history known as the HD Format War, remembering those times when HD DVD rode high, with low prices, more features and less restrictive rights management as its rallying cries, and the rantings of Michael Bay still only the delusional fantasies of a fool. May the resistance live on, and our PS3s always be reminded of a time when their ascension was not guaranteed. Red's dead, baby.

Robot babysitter keeps kids occupied in Japanese store

Filed under:

Inhuman babysitters aren't all that uncommon around the world, but a new creature recently placed in a Japanese department store is a godsend for shopaholics with rugrats in tow. Developed by Tmsuk, the 1.4-meter tall bot is employed at a Fukuoka retailer in order to keep watch over rambunctious youngsters that are dropped off by their overworked parents. Reportedly, said critter boasts an integrated projector and camera, a colorful yellow / white outfit and the ability to identify children by name based on a special tag that each kiddo wears while playing. Of course, the manufacturer isn't looking to just shove one or two of these into every store in Japan -- oh no, it's hoping to create similar robots that could one day "guide customers through the aisles of a store," fill their carts or whisper the joke of the day in a French accent into their ears.
